Psalm 69^[a]

For the director of music. To the tune of “Lilies.” Of David.

¹Save me, O God,
    for the waters^(A) have come up to my neck.^(B)
²I sink in the miry depths,^(C)
    where there is no foothold.
I have come into the deep waters;
    the floods engulf me.
³I am worn out calling for help;^(D)
    my throat is parched.
My eyes fail,^(E)
    looking for my God.
⁴Those who hate me^(F) without reason^(G)
    outnumber the hairs of my head;
many are my enemies without cause,^(H)
    those who seek to destroy me.^(I)
I am forced to restore
    what I did not steal.

⁵You, God, know my folly;^(J)
my guilt is not hidden from you.^(K)

³⁰I will praise God’s name in song^(A)
    and glorify him^(B) with thanksgiving.
³¹This will please the Lord more than an ox,
    more than a bull with its horns and hooves.^(C)
³²The poor will see and be glad^(D)—
    you who seek God, may your hearts live!^(E)
³³The Lord hears the needy^(F)
    and does not despise his captive people.

³⁴Let heaven and earth praise him,
    the seas and all that move in them,^(G)
³⁵for God will save Zion^(H)
    and rebuild the cities of Judah.^(I)
Then people will settle there and possess it;
³⁶    the children of his servants will inherit it,^(J)
    and those who love his name will dwell there.^(K)

    little Israel, do not fear,
for I myself will help^(C) you,” declares the Lord,

¹⁵“See, I will make you into a threshing sledge,^(F)
    new and sharp, with many teeth.
You will thresh the mountains^(G) and crush them,
    and reduce the hills to chaff.^(H)
¹⁶You will winnow^(I) them, the wind will pick them up,

But you will rejoice^(L) in the Lord

¹⁷“The poor and needy search for water,^(O)

But I the Lord will answer^(Q) them;
    I, the God of Israel, will not forsake^(R) them.
¹⁸I will make rivers flow^(S) on barren heights,
    and springs within the valleys.
I will turn the desert^(T) into pools of water,^(U)
    and the parched ground into springs.^(V)
¹⁹I will put in the desert^(W)
    the cedar and the acacia,^(X) the myrtle and the olive.
I will set junipers^(Y) in the wasteland,
    the fir and the cypress^(Z) together,^(AA)
²⁰so that people may see and know,^(AB)
    may consider and understand,^(AC)
that the hand^(AD) of the Lord has done this,
    that the Holy One^(AE) of Israel has created^(AF) it.

John Testifies About Jesus

²⁹The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Look, the Lamb of God,^(A) who takes away the sin of the world!^(B) ³⁰This is the one I meant when I said, ‘A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.’^(C) ³¹I myself did not know him, but the reason I came baptizing with water was that he might be revealed to Israel.”

³²Then John gave this testimony: “I saw the Spirit come down from heaven as a dove and remain on him.^(D) ³³And I myself did not know him, but the one who sent me to baptize with water^(E) told me, ‘The man on whom you see the Spirit come down and remain is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit.’^(F) ³⁴I have seen and I testify that this is God’s Chosen One.”^[a]^(G)
